Head of Bioinformatics

· Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
Employment Type Full-Time
Minimum Experience Manager/Supervisor
Compensation Negotiable

The Role

As Head of Bioinformatics, you will head up our Professional Services division and a team of dedicated bioinformatics consultants who manage all customer facing work.

They are responsible for a range of activities across pre-sales, implementation, integration, configuration, training, support, performance management and customer service.

Right now this is a team of 3, but we expect it to grow quickly in line with customer acquisitions. You will also have the support of an experienced project manager, to cover what is today 8 live projects with budgets up to £250K which are a mix of managed services and our new SaaS platform.

You will be interacting with our customers all over the world on a regular basis but site visits are not a necessary part of customer relationships.

It will be your job to manage the department effectively to create happy customers, delivering projects on time and budget.

Our current processes are fairly ad hoc so a major focus of your role will be to establish consistent and effective customer processes and iteratively improve them.

These processes will include:

  • Client assessment, proposal, presales, implementation scheduling and technical consulting.
  • Integration with customer systems and bioinformatics workflows.
  • Responding to customer issues to drive customer satisfaction.
  • Identifying, documenting and communicating issues to our Engineering team.
  • Providing feedback to our Product team as the voice of the customer.
  • Production, review and ongoing improvement of technical documentation and training collateral.

This is just a selection, you will have full remit to make the changes you feel are necessary within your department.

The Experience

While we expect this role to be more organisational than technical you will need a certain level of knowledge in order to build credibility with our customers.

If you don’t come from a Bioinformatics background you must have a solid understanding of molecular biology, ideally from Ph.D. or Master's studies.

Aside from the broader domain knowledge, you should also have exposure to cloud technologies and Python/R.

The team you will manage will come from technical backgrounds and while you don’t need to do the work you’ll need to understand it. Their work covers Python, R, Java, Linux, HPC, MongoDB, Solr, Hbase, Azure, AWS, Docker and more.

You will already be running a professional services team or department and be able to talk through the situation that you inherited and the positive impacts you have made.

You should have a strong track record of ensuring that your teams have delivered work on time, to budget and spec.

Finally, you will need an engaging manner with customers, combined with meticulous attention to detail and outstanding organisational ability to be successful in this position.
